Microsoft Windows FREE Backup Software Not Supported by Microsoft
Are you still using the FREE backup software that came with Windows? This has been deprecated (phased obsolescence) since Oct 2017 and is no longer supported by Microsoft.
What Should I Do Now?
It was only ever put into Windows 10 to support Windows 7 users who wanted to quickly restore file backups from the old operating system. Microsoft are likely to remove it completely when Windows 7 becomes obsolete in Jan 2020. If you’re using Windows 7 you should be seriously considering moving to Windows 10 anyway. If you are using the backup software then you should be looking for alternatives.
I cannot say it enough, you should have a backup.
Windows continues to have bad updates that can cause catastrophic failures without warning. The last major update at the beginning of October 2018 DELETED user files!
Microsoft had to pull that update and its now just started being rolled back out (mid Nov 18).
Hard drives fail without warning.
Data can be accidentally deleted.
Malware, Viruses and Ransomware that can destroy your data are constantly being released.
With all of these threats a backup is the only way to recover.
Windows 8 onwards does come with an alternative Free software called File History but this is not a replacement for the backup software.
It can only create one system image (this software is also being deprecated) at a time.
It only includes the files needed to run windows.
It requires an external drive.
It does not backup to the cloud.
It is not encrypted.
It cannot be scheduled.
It cannot be compressed.
It doesn’t backup anything that is being used at the time!
